Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739-1799) was a prolific Austrian composer and violin virtuoso. Born in Vienna, he studied music with Johann Joseph Fux and Johann Georg Albrechtsberger. In 1761, he was appointed Kapellmeister to the Prince-Bishop of Breslau, and in 1765 he became Kapellmeister to the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. He held this post until 1773, when he resigned to become a freelance composer. Dittersdorf was a close friend of Mozart, and the two composers often performed together. He died in Vienna in 1799.
