Formula 1 Hungarian GP: Hamilton beats Verstappen to pole
Hamilton produced stunning final qualifying lap
Lewis Hamilton produced a stunning final qualifying lap to snatch pole position from Max Verstappen at the Hungarian GP. The Mercedes driver charged to his first pole of the 2024 season with a time of 1:15.419, just 0.044 seconds ahead of Verstappen's Red Bull.
It was a thrilling qualifying session, with the top three drivers all within a tenth of a second of each other. McLaren's Lando Norris qualified third, just 0.056 seconds behind Verstappen.
Hamilton's pole position is his first since the Bahrain GP in March. It is also the 101st pole position of his career, moving him within one of Michael Schumacher's all-time record.
Verstappen will be disappointed to have missed out on pole, but he will be confident of challenging for victory from second on the grid.
Norris leads Piastri in McLaren one-two
Lando Norris led McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to a one-two finish in FP3 for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Norris set a time of 1:17.288, just 0.044 seconds ahead of Piastri. It was a strong session for McLaren, who have been struggling for pace in recent races.
Fernando Alonso was third fastest for Aston Martin, ahead of Carlos Sainz in the Ferrari and Sergio Perez in the Red Bull.
Hamilton was only sixth fastest, but he is confident of being able to challenge for victory on Sunday.
The Hungarian Grand Prix takes place on Sunday, July 21.
